Since April 1, most of our organization’s administrative activities have been centralized in our Montreal head office. Like many of our non-profit contemporaries, we needed to reduce our overhead costs and closing the regional offices was a difficult, but necessary decision to ensure CWY can offer high-quality and innovative programs well into the future. Also, to ensure the sustainability of our Global Learner programs, we are maintaining an office in Toronto which houses these programs offered to teachers and other youth workers wishing to organize educational stays abroad for groups of young people.

CWY continues to have a strong presence across Canada through our programs in communities from coast to coast. Our program managers and project supervisors are located throughout Canada and continue to work with local partners in developing unique community-based programs. With two programs as project supervisor under her belt (Ontario/India 2003-2004 and Ontario/Peru 2005-2006), Laura has enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to work with CWY alumni. She sees the alumni network as a fantastic forum through which former participants can continue to play an active role in the development of just, harmonious, and sustainable societies. Here’s a message from Laura:

This year is an exciting one for alumni and volunteers at CWY. The organization has made YOU a priority! We are currently developing our first ever national alumni strategy, which will be clear and consistent about opportunities, services, and communications with alumni nationwide. We want to develop a network that is equitable and sustainable to ensure that there are regional networks and local opportunities whether you are east or west, north or south, rural or urban, young or less young. The network will involve various regional and national roles for alumni, from serving as an alumni representative on the board of directors, making your voice heard on a regional or national committee, accessing information and services or working directly with your local alumni on various initiatives or in program-support. The next issue of this newsletter, due out in late September, will highlight these opportunities, explain how to step up for these positions, and more!

As CWY alumni, you come from varied backgrounds and regions, but what you all have in common is the transformative effect CWY has had on your lives. And as you continue to learn and apply what you’ve learned in the program, the alumni network will be a valuable resource for you.

Your voice and experience with CWY are highly valued and I encourage you to be in touch with me and/or other alumni to reconnect, share ideas, and get involved. I look forward to hearing from you!
You can reach me at ltripp@cwy-jcm.org or 1 888-525-4326 (toll-free number).

Stay connected!

Do we have your updated contact info? TNM is an electrifying musical and culinary celebration of Asian culture run exclusively by youth and aimed at promoting youth leadership and community involvement.

The booth was a hit – Michael’s DJ skills on the turntables drew in a lot of enthusiastic young people, as did a game that quizzed their knowledge of development issues and geography. The alumni brought along photos and souvenirs from their own programs so others could have a first-hand look at the unique expeditions offered by CWY. Almost 80 youth signed up to be contacted by CWY and countless more learned about the program. As Emily concludes, "We’re eager to encourage other youth to join CWY. I was super-excited to get involved as a volunteer!

The theme of Laura's exchange was eco-leadership. Through my involvement in international communities and eco-villages – an interest which started during my CWY exchange to Mexico – I was able to give Laura a list of contacts that she found very useful. I also offered the use of my eleven-passenger van. It helped Laura’s group and gave me a chance, as the driver, to participate in some of the team’s activities. What a way to relive the CWY "glory days"!

What I found most rewarding was hosting a counterpart pair. It was a richly gratifying experience, especially for Miranda, daughter of my then-fiancée Wendy. It was also interesting to see CWY from a slightly different angle, after having been a participant.

I look forward to being involved with Laura’s 2007/2008 program. After all, why should current participants have all of the fun?

My own CWY experience also lives on through lasting friendships. Just a few weeks ago, some Mexico program team mates and I hit the road to Saskatchewan, to attend a team mate’s wedding. We found ourselves changing a tire on the roadside. This photo is evidence of our highly developed skill-set. Good memories. Good friends.
